Meet Damien
On 16 March 2026, I will leave Perth on a push bike and point the front wheel east
toward Geelong. I will be riding solo and unsupported across Australia,
approximately 4000kms. Carrying what I need and figuring the rest out as I go. No
schedule carved in stone. Just me, the bike, and whatever the road decides to hand
out.
My name is Damien Kelly, I’m 67 years old, retired, and this ride is a personal
challenge — but more importantly, it’s a ride with purpose. This is a chance to see
Australia slowly, to test myself honestly, and to remind myself that retirement doesn’t
mean standing still.
There’ll be headwinds and tailwinds, sore legs, and moments of doubt — but also
sunrises, quiet country towns, generous strangers, and the steady rhythm that only
comes from turning pedals day after day.
I am riding in support of the Callum and Jake and Robinson Foundation,
established in memory of Callum and Jake, two Australian brothers whose lives
were tragically cut short while travelling in Mexico. Like many parents and
grandparents, their loss hit me hard. It’s impossible not to think of your own kids,
your own grandkids, and how fragile and precious life really is.
This ride is about honouring their memory, supporting the foundation’s work, and
showing that compassion, resilience, and community can rise from unimaginable
loss.
I invite you to be part of this journey.
